The Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Association (MIFLA) welcomes interested colleges and universities to consider hosting its future annual conferences, known as MIFLC (Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference). Sponsoring a MIFLC is an impactful way to showcase your institution, serve the profession, and engage your faculty and students in the latest research of our disciplines.

Considerations for hosting MIFLC:

  1. An interested institution should request the official “Working Papers” from the MIFLA Secretary-Treasurer (delmastromp@cofc.edu) to review the responsibilities associated with organizing and executing a MIFLC meeting.
  2. The faculty member who directs/oversees the conference at his/her institution will serve as President of MIFLA and Chair of the MIFLA Executive Committee during the year in question.
  3. The host institution must send to the MIFLA Secretary-Treasurer (delmastromp@cofc.edu) two letters of commitment–one from the department chair and one from the school’s dean or equivalent administrator–following the templates included below.*
  4. The host institution should commit a minimum contribution of $5,000 for the conference.  Historically some host institutions have committed a bit less and much more for a successful event.  All depends upon the logistics and planning of the host as well as available funding locally.
  5. The host institution agrees to hold the conference during the three days stipulated in Article IX. A. of the Constitution.
  6. The conference budget of the host institution may be supplemented by the departmental or school-wide budget to cover additional expenses beyond the recommended $5,000 contribution.  Mailings, office supplies, the keynote speaker, receptions, etc., are all expenses that past host institutions have covered with extra departmental or school-wide funds.

Other considerations:

  1. Does your institution have adequate, nearby hotel facilities to accommodate the MIFLC participants?
  2. Does your institution have adequate space to accommodate the conference sessions?  Past conference programs are available upon request to assist with this question. Institutions that do not have adequate conference space have used hotel meeting rooms for the conference.
  3. Does your institution have a relatively nearby airport?
